Explore your artistic side this summer and fall in Stratford, Bayfield and Elora & Fergus

Tourism experiences focus on creativity

STRATFORD, Ont. (September 12, 2017) – Going on end-of-summer vacation isn’t just about recharging the batteries and taking a break from work — not that there’s anything wrong with that. But it’s when travellers really get to experience the places they’re visiting and see what makes them so special that the greatest holiday memories are made.
Stratford, Bayfield and Elora & Fergus in southwestern Ontario have created a variety of new activities that are bound to make a memorable impression on visitors by helping them explore their own creativity as well as the artistic sides of the communities.
Two of these creative experiences on tap this fall include:
The Stratford Lantern Parade (Stratford)
  • Stratford, picturesque home to the world-renowned Stratford Festival, is hosting 15 new events and activities that capture its growing reputation as a cultural resort town. Among them, the Stratford Lantern Parade is organized and hosted by Playmakers! Theatre School. Hundreds of participants will gather on the banks of the Avon River to light up home-made lanterns and parade along the water’s edge. Along the route, and at the reception to follow, musicians, story-tellers and re-enactors will entertain walkers with songs, stories and folklore drawn from a variety of sources. For more information on the event and lantern workshop dates please visit http://www.makers.ca/lantern-parade

Songwriters’ Circle and Workshop (Stratford)
  • Some of Canada’s most-talented songwriters will perform their songs and share the stories behind them during a songwriting workshop organized by DigiWriting. The event will occur during Stratford Writers Festival between October 20 – 22nd, 2017 will also feature songwriting circle as part of a brunch experience. Further announcements will be made at http://digiwriting.com/stratford-writers-festival/

Gilgan gifts $10 million to hospital's Promise Campaign to improve west end health

Peter Gilgan honours west end roots and parents with record donation to St. Joseph's Health Centre

Gilgan gifts $10 million to hospital's Promise Campaign to improve west end health
TORONTO, ON --(Marketwired - September 07, 2017) - Peter Gilgan, founder and CEO of Mattamy Homes, is paying tribute to his parents and his childhood in the west end of Toronto with a $10 million donation to the Promise Campaign at St. Joseph's Health Centre. Gilgan, who was born at St. Joseph's Health Centre, is making one of the largest donations in the hospital's history to support west end community care.
One of Canada's most generous philanthropists, Gilgan has donated more than $175 million to support life-changing causes. This donation to the $70 million Promise Campaign has sentimental value for Gilgan, who along with his six siblings was born at St. Joe's. The gift will name the Gilgan Family Wing in honour of his parents and the family's strong ties to the community.
"The importance of community care, and supporting St. Joe's half-a-million neighbours who rely on this valuable community hospital, cannot be overstated," says Gilgan. "My parents started our family in this community and I was born here along with my siblings. I want to make sure that St. Joe's remains a vital community resource for all of the new families starting out here today and am proud to connect my family name to this fine health centre."
Gilgan's donation will have immediate impact and advance the campaign's goal to modernize and enhance spaces for patients, purchase new equipment and technology, and create specialized areas to meet the community's unique health needs.
"Peter Gilgan's gift is transformative for St. Joseph's. It's one of the largest in our history and will help us improve our facilities to support our west end neighbours. We'll be a better Health Centre thanks to him and are grateful that he has remembered where he and his brothers and sisters were born," says Maria Dyck, President and CEO, St. Joseph's Health Centre Foundation. "Beyond dollars and cents, it marks the continued commitment of Gilgan to supporting community hospitals and great local care."
Gilgan will join forces with co-chairs of the Promise campaign, Victor Dodig, CEO and President of CIBC, and Brendan Shanahan, President of the Toronto Maple Leafs, in the Promise to make Toronto's west end one of the healthiest community in Canada. Dodig and Shanahan both have strong community ties and have committed to transform care at St. Joseph's.
"Peter's business has always been about building communities," says Dodig. "This transformative gift is pivotal to supporting this community, for the people who call it home today and for future generations to come."
Community hospitals are at the heart of a healthy community. St. Joe's sees over 500,000 visits every year and our teams provide the full spectrum of care from paediatric care to specialized services for seniors-supporting people and families through all of life's important moments.
"St. Joe's has been serving the west-end for almost 100 years and significant donations like these help the hospital to advance its vision to make this community one of the healthiest in Canada," said Dr. Bob Howard, Interim President CEO of the newly integrated health network which includes Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph's Health Centre and St. Michael's Hospital. "We are thankful for the generosity of the Gilgan family."

50,000 square feet of new film studio space on Kipling Studio Campus

Toronto Mayor John Tory and Cinespace Film Studios kick off TIFF with groundbreaking of Titan Studios: 50,000 square feet of new film studio space on Kipling Studio Campus

TORONTO, Sept. 7, 2017 /CNW/ - Today Mayor John Tory joined Cinespace Film Studios in the groundbreaking of two new, 20,000 square foot, purpose-built film studios on Cinespace's Kipling Studio Campus, in Toronto's west end.
"When I go out selling our film industry, the one concern I hear repeatedly is the shortage of studio space. That's why today's announcement is so important," said Mayor John Tory. "Our film, television and digital industry has had booming success over the last couple of years and it's clear that the industry shows no signs of slowing down. I congratulate our studio veterans - Cinespace and the Mirkopoulos Family - on this project and for responding to the industry demand for studio space."
Cinespace is Toronto's 30-year studio veteran, having brought over 1.3 million square feet of studio space in Toronto online over the course of those 30 years.
Cinespace is also a pioneer of the original Studio District in downtown Toronto, beginning in 1988 in the Eastern Avenue and Carlaw Avenue area. In 2009 Cinespace expanded their operation to Toronto's west end, creating a new node of production activity in Etobicoke, and doubling the employment capacity of the former manufacturing plant on Kipling Avenue. This is now the home of the Kipling Studio Campus, the largest and busiest facility in Canada with the capacity for six large productions to shoot concurrently onsite, including the critically acclaimed and award-winning series "The Handmaid's Tale", and five other productions domiciled here in 2017.
"Today the Cinespace family is announcing the first phase of our multi-year, multi-million dollar investment and intensification initiative, beginning with the construction of the new 'Titan Studios' right here on our very successful Kipling Studio Campus", announced Cinespace's President and CEO, Steve Mirkopoulos.
The new Titan Studios will offer capacity for a seventh project to shoot concurrently on the Kipling Campus, with two 20,000 square foot studios and connecting support space to be constructed side-by-side, on the Titan Road border of the campus.  This will add 50,000 square feet of purpose-built, state-of-the-art production space and key support facilities to Toronto's studio inventory, with demand currently at an all-time high.
Mirkopoulos added, "Beyond the new Titan Studios, Cinespace's investment and intensification plan being launched today also includes the commitment to additional purpose-built studios, critical production support facilities and unique film infrastructure that does not currently exist in Toronto, beginning with a large, permanent underwater filming tank - all of which will make Toronto much more competitive on the world stage."
In recent years the film, television and digital media production industry has grown to more than $2 billion in economic activity in Ontario, creating tens of thousands of jobs in Toronto alone. Today's announcement signals that Mayor Tory and Cinespace see continued growth ahead in the film sector, with studio development driving more production to Toronto than ever before.
About Cinespace:Cinepace Film Studios is the largest private owner, operator and developer of space for film, TV and digital media production in North America, with over 2 million square feet of space in both Toronto and Chicago.
